<< Last chapter | Rules | Next chapter >> 3. Youth Basketsim offers multiple ways of signing talents. Every week your club hosts a camp for young talents to show what they're made of. Everyone can come and play, while your coach will try to pick the best player. You can go two roads from there. One is to pick 16 - 17yo player and add him directly to your first team. Or you can go with 14 - 15yo instead and add him to your Youth team. If you go with direct promotion, 50.000 investment gives you a decent shot at finding someone good. This is a good option for teams that are not rich enough to buy a great coach. Because promoting a player directly to your first team largely depends on luck and anyone can get lucky. However when adding a player to your Youth team you will have to rely on your skilled coach to make sure that you have any chance of succeeding. In Basketsim there is also an option to draft players. Draft occurs once per season, 19 - 20yo players from unknown clubs are evaluated by the experts to make a list of picks. Every club have a privilege to sign up and be a part of this prestigious event. On Monday, the day before the national cups start, draft begin early in the morning. Best teams are forced to choose between the lower picks, while lesser teams get the better picks. There is a small chance for a high pick to be an average quality player and a small chance for a great player to be ranked in the low tier. There is also the third way to attract a decent prospect to your team. By supporting a local college with a large financial injection, you get the right to sign one of their best players after the season is over. It's typically a player, aged between 21 and 22yo. You can wait until the last day of the season to sign the deal with the college's headmaster and the quality of player might very much depend on the size of your donation. YOUTH TEAMS There is no doubt that Youth teams deserve a special chapter. This is because of their specifics, as there is no other way to develop players in a similar way like it can be done with 14 - 17yo players in your Youth team. Some clubs are unable to include youngsters to their senior team at all, often because they are playing against immense opponents on weekly basis, their goals are set high and they can't afford to play unexperienced players in the all-important matches. Such teams are still able to take a good care of their Youth teams, while teams focusing primarly on the youngsters - even inside their senior team lineups - can double the fun and their prospect by having a quality Youth team. It's easy to start your own Youth team, all you need to do is to promote at least one 14 - 15yo player from the Camp and this is the start of the team that can sustain up to 12 players. After you reach the maximum of 12, you can sack any players you don't like or promote some of them to the senior team to give place to the newcomers. Players up to 17yo can be a part of a Youth team, when they reach 18 years of age, they are added to your senior squad automatically by your club personel. In theory a new player can join the Youths every Friday. Typically one quarter of the players coming from the camps are 14yo, while majority are 15yo. You can fire any Youth team player at no cost, just make sure to understand that there's no way back; once fired, a youngster will retire indefinitely. Player must be 16 years old, before he's eligible for promotion to the seniors. It costs 25.000 to promote a player from the youth to senior team. Promoted players can never again return to the Youth team. Youth team members can be included in usual physical training in the gym, but they can't take part in first team matches. It's not possible to call them to national or U18 national team and they can't compete in the 3-point contest. Their contracts are not professional, so their wages don't reflect their quality, they only reflect their age group. So make sure you won't fire anyone, just because his salary is rather low! One of the main distinctions between the senior team members and the youths is how they develop. When you first observe a newly acquired youngster, all you have is coach's recommendation, but actual skills are a mystery. You can observe the level of talent, which is a brief description of his potential future workrate, but it has no impact towards his youth career success. Players are developed individually, skill after skill. Every youngster can be given a skill to focus on and the amount of time to develop that skill. If your coach is less experienced you will probably face 4 weeks per skill limit and that might not be enough for good results. The most experienced coaches will give players an option for 9 weeks focus, but going down that road will require a good plan on how many skills you plan to develop at this player, before promoting him. Right balance is the key of youth developement. So how exactly does the player development work? First make sure that you have a coach, don't even bother if you don't have one, even a poor coach is better than no coach. When you have decided which skill to focus on and for how long - make sure that it's your final decision, because once you assign player with the task, he won't switch to another before completing it. Refocusing on the same skill is possible, but there is zero added value in focusing on the same skill again, unless better coach was hired in the mean time. It's also worthless to try developing any skill in a one or two weeks time. You should find the right time, going for 9 weeks can have a good impact, but the difference between 3 and 6 is way bigger as the difference between 6 and 9 weeks. After you set instructions, player starts his developement according to provisional workrate. It's a situation-specific value and it probably won't be the same when he's going to work on his next skill. Provisional workrate is based on coach's experience, coach's ability to handle the youngsters, some luck, just a bit of coach's workrate and very important - time settings! Every Thursday, the training results are analysed and if the focus time has expired, player's skill becomes visible. Developed skill is result of several factors, not only those described above (provisional workrate), but also his existing skills, character and physique. For example tall and heavy players will have hard time developing quickness in the same way as players that are short and lightweight. If skill in question is rebounding, it might be just the opposite. And character-wise, selfish player might be more motivated focusing on shooting as on defence and so on. So why promote a player before the age of 18? For numerous reasons! With number one reason - after becoming more and more skillful, player will find it extremely hard to develop new skills in same way as before. Eventually, a time should come, best to promote him, either to play and train him inside your first team or to sell him on the market and release a spot for someone younger and eager to learn fast. Players will also find it difficult to get any experience at all withouth being involved in first team matches and special talentes will surelly be hunted by the U18 national coaches. So Youth team should really be just that first step for players in their developement. Players usually won't have all skills developed when they are promoted, so make sure they'll develop skills that suit them best! Undeveloped skills will be revealed after promotion, but will not be as good as skills that were properly developed. BUY YOUTH Rare, but also existing option is to buy clubless youth players and add them to your youth team. This option can be found under market link in the menu and it allows you to bring in foreign players and players with some skills already developed. However getting players in by this method can be a frustrating experience and it requires a dedicated manager with lots of patience and determination to fight the market closures and other restrictions. First restriction is the fact that market only reopenes every time when there are at least 15 players available, so you need to check back often to get someone great. Second restriction is a cruel fact that not every youngster will sign for every club. Who he'll sign for depends on his personality, club's recent success and club's long term prospect as he sees it. There is also third restriction - as you can only have 3 foreign players at once in your youth team. Once a player is signed and added to your youth team, he's not really any different to your other youth team members, so everything explained in this chapter above applies to him. << Last chapter | Rules | Next chapter >> |
